Thread Vein Removal

What are Thread Veins?

Thread veins are rather common; these tiny blood vessels run close to the surface of the skin and look like fine red, or sometimes purple, spider like lines. Which is why they are often called 'spider veins' or 'broken veins'. However, despite the name these veins aren't broken, only slightly enlarged. The medical term for them is telangiectasia.

Is Treatment Right For Me?

Most superficial red skin lesions including facial thread veins, rosacea, spider naevi, port wine stains are usually treated with IPL, whereas leg veins up to 3mm in diameter are usually treated with Laser.
Unsightly thread veins also known as broken capillaries and various other vascular lesions on the face or body can be safely removed using IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or Laser. This form of treatment is suitable for many people, however some medications can interact with the IPL. Therefore prior to treatment you must first undergo a consultation where details about your medical history will be obtained in order to confirm your suitability. Before proceeding you will be asked to give informed consent and a test patch will be carried out to make sure the treatment is the right choice for you.

How is the Treatment Performed?

Both IPL and Laser systems emit light, which is readily absorbed by blood vessels, heating to a point where they are destroyed. Following treatment, the vessels quickly clear as the body absorbs and dispenses them, leaving little or no trace of the original vessel.
For IPL treatments a thin layer of gel is applied to the skin to aid light absorption by the vessel. The light applicator is then placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated. The gel is removed and the area cooled. A similar process is carried out for Laser treatment except the gel is not required.

During & After Treatment

Treatment is mildly uncomfortable but there is no need for anesthesia and the procedure is quite quick. Sensations vary but most describe it as a very quick hot pinprick. After treatment the area may feel warm for a few hours. Some delicate skin areas such as the cheeks or décolleté can be red and swollen for up to 48 hours. Redness and swelling is expected when treating leg veins, however it quickly subsides. Though very rare, there is a chance a small blister may form or there could be temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.

How Quickly Does it Work?

Treatments typically take from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the type and amount of vessels to be treated. After the treatment thread veins can disappear straight away, or be visibly reduced. However it may take 2-6 treatments to see the maximum results, though small lesions may clear in just a single session. Repeat treatments may be needed, and are spaced every 4 to 6 weeks.
